Can you be a pilot at 14?

Can you be a pilot at 14? Gosh, I wish! I remember being obsessed with planes when I was that age. Spent hours glued to airplane spotter websites, you know? Dreaming of soaring through the clouds. No, generally speaking, the answer’s a big fat no. Most places, you gotta be at least 16 to even think about getting a pilot’s license for a regular airplane. It’s just the rules, I guess. Makes sense, in a way; you need to be pretty responsible to handle something like that.

But! There’s a teeny tiny sliver of hope. Apparently, 14-year-olds can actually fly gliders or balloons! I read about this kid, somewhere online – I think it was a British news story? – who got his glider license at 15, practically a prodigy! That’s pretty cool, right? Though, even with gliders, you’ll probably still need to show you’re decent at English. Makes sense, you’re communicating with air traffic control and all that. Imagine trying to explain a tricky situation with broken English – yikes!

So, no, probably not a Boeing 747 at 14. But maybe a glider? A balloon? Who knows, maybe your 14-year-old self will surprise you! If I’d known about gliders back then… oh man, I’d have been all over that!
