For a family of four, you’re looking at roughly $5,829.4 AUD without rent. A single person? Around $1,646 AUD, also excluding rent. I saw this data somewhere, maybe a blog post a while ago. (USD equiv: 3755.5 and 1060.4 respectively)

I feel like that number is totally believable.

Personally, when I was living solo in Melbourne back in Febuary ’18, even sharing a place I was easily dropping $1200 a month. (Place near Flinders St Station, paid $250/week rent). Food, transport, the occassional concert at The Espy… adds up quick!

Apparently, it’s a touch cheaper than the States, like 2.4% overall. But honestly? It felt more expensive. Maybe just ’cause I was earning less haha.

Transportation… Car rego, insurance, petrol… Public transport ain’t free either.

My sister, Sarah, she manages on less than that in Cairns, though she’s always broke. Always stressed. It’s not enough for real comfort. That’s for sure. It’s a struggle.
