Major US Events of 1924: What Happened?

Okay, lemme tell ya what I kinda remember ’bout 1924 in the US, kinda foggy like an old movie reel, y’know?

Major US Events of 1924:

  • U.S. presidential election: Calvin Coolidge (Republican) won against John W. Davis (Democrat) and Robert M. La Follette (Progressive).
  • First Woman Governor: Nellie Tayloe Ross (Wyoming) got elected as the first ever woman to be a state governor in the US.

See, great grandpa used to talk about Coolidge. He loved the guy, said he was a “silent type,” which I guess was a compliment back then? shrugs

And Nellie Tayloe Ross? What a trailblazer! My own gramdmother, born like ’26 in rural Oklahoma, always said Ross gave her hope. That name, Ross, kinda stuck.

I’m pretty sure grandpa told me ’bout this election. I was maybe, eh, seven, eight? Listened to him talkin’ on the porch swing. He said the country was doin’ okay but that farmes were feelin’ the squeeze. I remeber him sayin “Coolidge has the right idea on taxes” too, kinda strange.

Gramdmother loved hearin’ ’bout women breakin’ through. She ended up teachin’ at the local schoolhouse; maybe Ross inspired her more than she knew, but I remember it was important to her, like, “we can do anything.” Amazing.

What was life like in 1924?

Ugh, 1924. Black and white photos, always black and white. My grandma told stories, but you know, old people stories are… filtered. She loved her flapper dresses. I bet they were itchy. Imagine, no internet! How did they even… communicate? Telegrams? So slow.

Okay, so cars. My grandpa’s Model T Ford. A total clunker. But it was his clunker. He was so proud. Makes me think of my beat-up Honda Civic, ha. Completely different technology, obviously.

Radio was HUGE. My great-aunt had one. A giant wooden thing. Probably picked up static all day. No streaming services then, huh? Crazy. Music was so different, I hear. Jazz, I guess? I need to listen to some.

Women got the right to vote in the US, finally. About time. Took them long enough. Progress wasn’t exactly lightning fast back then, was it? I wonder what other social changes happened that year… Something about the Olympics? I should look that up.

Wait, what about fashion? Those dropped waistlines… and the bob haircuts! I’d probably look terrible. My hair is too thick for that.

This whole thing is making me realize how much life has changed. So much faster now. Faster than I like sometimes, honestly. Everything feels so… frantic. I miss simpler times, even if they weren’t so simple.

  • Transportation: Horses, Model T Fords, trains – very different from today’s cars and planes.
  • Communication: Telegrams, letters – no instant messaging or emails.
  • Entertainment: Radio, silent films – no Netflix, no streaming.
  • Social changes: Women’s suffrage in the US was a big deal that year. The 1924 Summer Olympics were in Paris.
  • Technology: Limited electricity, telephones were a luxury. Think of all that we take for granted now.

I’m exhausted just thinking about it all. Time for a nap.
