Do you still tip if there is a gratuity charge?

Okay, so you’re wondering about tipping when there’s already a gratuity charge, right? It’s a fair question, and honestly, it can be a little confusing!

Basically, a gratuity is already a tip, pre-calculated and added to your bill. So, technically, do you need to tip extra? Nope! The gratuity is supposed to cover the service. Think of it as built-in appreciation for the staff.

But, and this is a big but, what if the service was truly outstanding? Like, above and beyond amazing? That’s where it gets a little gray. I mean, personally, if someone’s been super attentive, anticipated my needs (you know, like refilling my water before I even ask, or offering a blanket when I look chilly), and generally made my experience fantastic, I might throw in a little extra. It’s a “thank you” for going the extra mile.

I remember this one time in New Orleans, the waiter practically gave us a history lesson about every dish we ordered, and his recommendations were spot on. The gratuity was already included, but honestly, I felt like he deserved more. We ended up adding a little something extra, and he was so appreciative. It just felt good, you know?

But again, it’s totally your call. If the service was just okay, or even a little lacking, sticking with just the gratuity is perfectly fine. Don’t feel pressured to add more if you don’t think it’s warranted. It’s your money, after all!
