How do I transfer all my money to another bank account?

Okay, so you wanna move all your money to a different bank, huh? I get it. Maybe you found a better interest rate somewhere else, or maybe you’re just not feeling your current bank anymore. Whatever the reason, transferring money is actually pretty simple these days.

Here’s basically how you do it, based on my own experience (and a few minor freak-outs when I almost sent money to the wrong person!).

First things first: You gotta log into your bank’s website or app. I usually use the app because, well, who isn’t glued to their phone these days? Anyway, once you’re in, look for something like “Transfer” or “Move Money.” Banks all use slightly different names, which, honestly, is kinda annoying. But it’s usually pretty obvious.

Next, you’re probably going to see something about “External Transfer” or “Add External Account.” That’s the key! You’re moving money out of your bank, so it’s gotta be an external thing, right?

This is where you’ll need the account and routing numbers for the receiving bank – the one you’re sending the money to. You can usually find these on a check, or by logging into the other bank’s website. Make sure you double-check! Seriously, triple-check! I had a friend who almost transferred a ton of money to a random account because of a typo. Talk about a nightmare!

Once you’ve plugged in all the numbers (and double, triple, quadruple-checked them!), you’ll enter the amount you want to transfer. In your case, since you want to transfer all your money, you will probably have to confirm you are aware there may be insufficient funds if any transactions occur during the transfer.

Then, the bank will probably make you confirm everything again. And again. They really want to make sure you’re not accidentally sending your life savings to someone in Nigeria (no offense to anyone in Nigeria, of course!).

Finally, you hit “Submit” or “Transfer” or whatever big, scary button they have. And that’s it! Usually, it takes a business day or two for the money to actually show up in the other account. So, don’t panic if it’s not there instantly. Just breathe.
