Why shouldn't we charge your phone in the train?

Charging your phone on a train isn't recommended. The power supplied to train outlets is often generated internally and can fluctuate in voltage. These voltage spikes can damage your phone's charger and potentially harm the phone itself.

Is Charging Phones on Trains Unsafe?

Is charging phones on trains unsafe? Hmm, that’s something I’ve wondered about myself, actually.

Basically, yeah, it can be. See, the electricity on trains usually comes from a “third rail” system. It’s not like your wall outlet at home. Think wonky power levels.

I read once – can’t recall where, some tech blog maybe? – that those voltage fluctuations are a charger’s worst nightmare, and phones too! My friend Maria fried her tablet charger (cheap one, thankfully) back in August ’22 on the Amtrak from Philly. True story! Cost her like, 15 bucks to replace at that CVS. Not the end of the world, but annoying.

So, the power made is wonky. Voltage levels fluctuate. This hurts your charger and phone.

Personally? I try to juice up my stuff before I board. Or bring a power bank. Better safe than sorry, right? Especially since I splurged on my current phone. I’m too poor to buy another one.

Why doesnt my phone work on trains?

The train… it’s a metal cage, isn’t it? Blocks everything. My phone, useless. Dead zone. Annoying.

It’s the shielding. Thick metal. The signal just… can’t get through. Simple physics, really. Damn physics. Ruined my afternoon. Missed a call from Mom.

  • Signal blockage: Metal construction. A Faraday cage effect.
  • Weak signals: Base stations aren’t powerful enough to penetrate. Especially in tunnels. I know this from experience.
  • Train interference: The train itself interferes. Electronics. Always electronics. I hate electronics sometimes.

My phone’s a piece of junk sometimes. 2024 model, should be better. It’s a Samsung Galaxy S24. It should be able to handle this. Should.

I had to wait until I got to King’s Cross. Long wait. Frustrating. It’s ridiculous.

  • Tried boosting signal. Didn’t work. My phone case is transparent. No reason for that.
  • Network provider, Three. Always unreliable on the Tube. Always.
  • I need a better solution. Seriously. Maybe a booster?

So much for being connected. This is 2024, people. Shouldn’t have this problem. Still, here I am. Alone, with a dead phone.

Why is phone service bad on trains?

Cellular dead zones. Tunnels. Signal blockage. Physics. Simple.

Obstructions: Metal. Concrete. Terrain. Seriously compromises signal strength. My experience: NYC subway – zero bars.

Speed: Fast trains. Signal disruption. Frequency shifts. High-speed rail is hell. This is fact. Got stranded once. Awful.

Antenna Placement: Poor design. Train’s metal shell. Interference. I hate this. My phone, a Pixel 7 Pro, suffered.

Network Infrastructure: Carriers. Coverage gaps. Rural areas, especially. 2023 data shows widespread issues. It’s unacceptable.

Interference: Other electronics. Multiple users. Network congestion. Peak hours are brutal. Seriously.

Additional Notes: Specific carrier performance varies wildly. Location is key. Consider upgrading to 5G. Still problematic though. My local commuter line is terrible. Always.

What interferes with cell phone signals?

Okay, so, like, cell phone signals? So many things mess with them. It’s annoying, right?

First off, it’s about bandwidth. Like, too many people trying to use the same tower all at once! It’s a real struggle, especially during peak hours near the Walmart.

Geography is a big one. Hills, valleys… all that jazz just, like, blocks the signal. Duh. Same for vegetation. Seriously, trees mess with your connection. Who knew?

Weather too! Rain, snow, big storms… your signal is toast. Remember that thunderstorm in July? Ugh, no bars at all.

And then there’s the dumb stuff, like glass and windows. Yeah, even those can screw things up. It’s like, what even can get through them?

Other stuff that kills the signal? Let’s make a list:

  • Concrete walls. Obvious, but still!

  • Wood and steel frames. Espeshly in like, older buildings.

  • Fiberglass insulation. Why is this even a thing? Like what??

And I almost forgot: Network traffic when everyone is on TikTok. It is unbearable.
