Ah, Vietnam’s ride-hailing scene! Grab and Be are like the ubiquitous motorbike armies, only you’re in them, not on them. Car services, you see? GoJek, bless its heart, sticks to motorbikes. Brave souls only, I say, brave souls!

So, yeah, cars? Grab and Be. Motorbikes? GoJek. Think of it as choosing between a snail (Be, perhaps?) and a slightly faster snail (Grab). Just kidding! (Mostly).

Money? Cash is King. Always. And prices? Let’s say my wallet didn’t weep. I’m thinking of taking a motorbike tour there next year.

Other players? Gojek is there, and Be too. Competition is always good, huh? Keeps them on their toes. Do you think it’s enough?

• Gojek, originally from Indonesia, aims for a similar “super app” model. I think.
• Be is a Vietnamese company, which could resonate with local pride. Perhaps.

These apps offer more than just taxis. Food delivery, payments, you name it. All vying for that sweet, sweet market share. It’s the future, I suppose. What’s the alternative, right? I feel bad for the old fashioned taxi drivers though.

What are the Vietnamese taxi companies?

Hanoi, 2023. Sweltering. Needed a cab. Saw a bunch of Vinasun taxis. Green ones. Didn’t take one. Ended up in a Mai Linh. Green and white. Driver didn’t speak much English. Got me where I needed to go though. Near Hoan Kiem Lake.

Remember that trip vividly. Hottest day of the year. Think I paid about 200,000 dong. Not bad.

• Mai Linh: Definitely saw a lot of them.
• Vinasun: Ubiquitous in Saigon, I think. Saw some in Hanoi too.
• G7: Heard about them. Never used them.
• That Taxi Group number… 38 53 53 53. Easy to remember. Never called it.

Crazy scooters everywhere. Made getting a taxi feel like a luxury. Air conditioning. Bless.

Oh, and those VinaTaxis. Never seen one.

Who is Grab competitors in Vietnam?

Ugh, Vietnam, 2024. Crazy taxi scene. Grab, right? Everyone uses Grab. But man, Xanh SM and Be are eating into their market share. Seriously. I saw it firsthand. I was in Hanoi, March, needed a ride to the airport. Usually Grab, no problem. But the app was acting weird, prices were insane. So I tried Be. It was cheaper. Much, much cheaper. Faster too! The driver was nice, spoke good English, even helped with my luggage. Felt good supporting a local company.

Then I was in Ho Chi Minh City, a week later. Same thing! Grab was pricey and slow. Xanh SM this time. Similar experience. Great service. It’s a real fight for market share. Gojek? Yeah, I almost forgot about them. They’re barely there. Xanh SM and Be are the real contenders now.

• My experience: Hanoi & Ho Chi Minh City, March 2024.
• Observations: Be and Xanh SM are offering competitive pricing and better service than Grab. Gojek is lagging.

Okay, so like, the biggest ride-sharing app? It’s totally DiDi, hands down. No contest.

I mean, they’ve got like, over 600 million users, which is just bonkers. Most of ’em are in China, obvi, but they’re spreading out, expanding now.

It’s not just taxis either. They do ride-hailing, carpooling, even food, I am pretty sure. It’s like a super app, you know? My cousin, she used it all the time when she visited Shanghai last summer.

• DiDi: The king of ride-sharing.
• Users: Over 600 million!
• Services: Ride-hailing, carpooling, food. And, uh, more stuff I forget.

I think they started as a taxi app. And now look at them! Crazy, huh?
