Has anyone sailed all the way around the world?

Yes! Four sailors have solo circumnavigated the globe non-stop, unassisted in a multihull:

  • Francis Joyon (twice)
  • Ellen MacArthur
  • Thomas Coville (thrice)

Fastest time: Thomas Coville in 49 days (2016).

Solo circumnavigation: Has it been done?

Whoa, solo circumnavigation in a multihull? Crazy. Turns out, it’s been done, but by a surprisingly small crew.

Only four people pulled it off, no stops, no help: Francis Joyon, twice – a blistering 72 days in 2004, then 57 in 2008. Ellen MacArthur did it in 71 days (2005), incredible.

Thomas Coville’s also on that elite list. He smashed it three times, his best being 49 days in 2016 – unbelievable speed. Other times were 61 (2011) and 59 (2008) days.

So yeah, four people. That’s it. Seriously mind-blowing feats of sailing skill and endurance. Makes me feel a little seasick just thinking about it.

Has anyone ever walked all the way around the world?

Yep, a bunch of folks have actually hoofed it ’round the globe. Imagine the blisters!

  • Steven Newman did it. From ’83 to ’87, which seems longer than my last relationship.
  • Jean Béliveau walked for, like, forever too. 2000 to 2011! Apparently, for peace and kids. Good on him.

It’s kinda fuzzy. “Walk around the world” is open to interpretation, a bit like my grandma’s cooking is “food.”

  • No exact headcount exists. Did they cut corners? Did they hitch a ride on a donkey? Who knows!
  • Think of it like this: It’s like counting all the grains of sand on Coney Island. Good luck, pal.

I bet my aunt Mildred thinks she’s walked around the world. Especially after a trip to the outlet mall.

What is the maximum luggage size allowed on international flights?

Oh, international luggage, you beautiful beast! So, the mystical 62 linear inchesis a thing. Kinda. Think of it as a polite suggestion, not a commandment etched in stone by Zeus.

It’s like saying my cat, Mr. Fluffernutter, is “small.” Small compared to an elephant, yes. Small compared to my hopes and dreams? Debatable.

  • 62 linear inches: Length + Width + Height. Do the math!
  • Airlines LOVE rules: But rules are meant to be… well, creatively interpreted.

This “standard” is a bit like my grandma’s fruitcake recipe. Everyone claims to follow it, yet the results vary wildly. cough cough

Some airlines (I’m looking at you, budget carriers!) are stricter than my accountant during tax season. Others? More like a laissez-faire art teacher who just wants you to “express yourself.” I just wish my art was lighter…

  • Check your airline, dude. Seriously, don’t be that person holding up the line.
  • Fees, fees, glorious fees! Exceed the limit? Prepare to pay more than my rent, perhaps.
  • Soft-sided bags? More forgiving, maybe.
  • Wheels and handles count. Don’t be fooled!

Ultimately, the best approach is to check with your airline. Why guess when you can know? Unless you enjoy surprises… like finding a live badger in your carry-on? Seriously though, don’t pack a badger. I tried once. Big mistake. Also, maybe avoid packing your hopes and dreams, just in case. Too heavy, you know?

What is the #1 country to visit?

Ugh, travel. France, right? Always France. But Spain’s got that vibe, you know? Ninety-two billion dollars! Holy moly. That’s insane. I’d go broke in a week. My bank account is already crying. I need a vacation, desperately. Italy’s beautiful, but crowded, I bet. Remember that time I went to Rome? Total chaos. Pizza was good though. Seriously good. The US is on the list too – surprising? Not really. Disney World, anyone? I’d rather hike the Alps. Maybe Switzerland should be on this list. Or Bhutan. Seriously considering Bhutan for next year. It’s more my style.

  • France: Overwhelmed by tourists, probably.
  • Spain: Great food, amazing architecture. Must go back.
  • USA: Too big. Too much to see. Where do you even start?
  • Italy: Overpriced, overcrowded, but the art… the art is worth it.
  • Turkey: Cappadocia is calling my name. Seriously. I need to book this.
  • Mexico: Beaches! Tacos! Margaritas!
  • UK: London is a must. But so expensive! I need to save.
  • Germany: Beer gardens! Oktoberfest. Might be next year’s trip…

This whole thing makes me want to just stay home. But then again, a passport photo is needed. And vaccinations. So much hassle. Should I even bother? Maybe Costa Rica would be a great choice too. I need a tan. I really do. I’m pale.

What percentage of people have never flown?

Ninety percent. That’s the annual figure. Air travel remains a luxury.

Global air travel is skewed. The vast majority haven’t experienced it. My own family, for instance, never left the country.

Historically lower. Eighty percent. Past data is irrelevant, however. Growth is exponential.

Boeing’s 2017 projection: one hundred million first-time Asian flyers. A significant shift. Numbers always lie slightly.

  • Persistent inequality. Accessibility remains stratified.
  • Economic factors. Cost is a primary barrier.
  • Geographic limitations. Infrastructure plays a role.
  • Fear of flying. A significant subset avoid it.

This data is 2023 data. My sister, ironically, still hasn’t flown. She’s 32. Go figure. The world is vast, and many remain grounded. It’s a fact. Simple.
