Comfortable living in Vietnam costs $500-$1000 monthly. This varies greatly depending on location (Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City are more expensive), housing choices, and lifestyle. Expect higher costs in major cities and with Western-standard accommodations. Budget accordingly.

How much money do I need to live comfortably in Vietnam?

Okay, so, Vietnam’s cost of living, huh? Tricky one. I spent three months in Hoi An, March-May 2023, and, honestly, $600 a month felt pretty comfy.

Rent was my biggest chunk – $250 for a cute little apartment near the Ancient Town. Food? Cheap! Street food was amazing, and eating out every day? Probably around $150, maybe a bit less.

Transportation? Scooters are everywhere, so I rented one for $50 a month, super convenient. Everything else, like entertainment and little souvenirs, probably another $150 to $200.

It could be less or more, obviously, depending on how much you splurge. But for a pretty nice life, $600 to $800 seems doable in many places. Maybe even less if you’re super frugal.

Ugh, Vietnam. Okay, so, like, living there? It kinda depends. I mean, you can totes live pretty cheap, or, you know, spend way more.

So, generally, you’re looking at $500 to $1,000 a month, ish. But seriously it depends. Here’s the deal:

  • Location, location, location! Huge differnce you know? Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City? Pricier. Smaller town? Dirt cheap. My cousin, he lives in Nha Trang, says it’s way less than Saigon.

  • Where you crash: A fancy apartment? Big bucks! A local place? Super cheap, but maybe, you know, fewer frills, less amenities, whatever. You get what I mean.

  • Lifestyle, duh: Eating street food is practically free. Western-style restaurants? Major price hike. Partying every night? Wallet drain! You get the idea, I guess.

  • Visa stuff: Don’t forget visa costs! These can really add up and change what you pay monthly to exist. Its another factor, you see?

I swear, like, every person’s experience is gonna be different. But yeah, $500-$1000…ballpark figure, I guess? So it is what it is.

How much money would you need to live in Vietnam?

$500-$1000/month. Minimum. Hanoi’s cheaper. Ho Chi Minh City? Forget it.

Factors:

  • Location: Big city = big bucks.
  • Housing: Luxury or slum? Your call.
  • Lifestyle: Ramen noodles or steak?

My take: $750 is realistic. That’s my budget, anyway. Could be less, could be much more. Depends on your tolerance for discomfort. And street food. I live well on less, but I’m frugal. I’m also a bit of a risk taker. I don’t do luxury.
