Does Halong Bay always have fog, or is it seasonal?

Ugh, Halong Bay fog… It’s a total crapshoot, honestly. December, January, February? Yeah, thick fog, seriously limited visibility. Like, couldn’t see the boat next to us sometimes. Brrr, freezing too.

Remember that trip in January 2023? Cost a fortune, about $500 for the cruise. So cold, wind whipping, and the fog was intense. Felt like we were in a ghost story. Couldn’t see more than a few meters.

Seriously though, the other months? It’s hit and miss. Sometimes a light mist, other times totally clear skies. No real pattern, it’s just… unpredictable. It depends on the weather system, I think, which is a total mystery to me.

Winter, December to February, is when the heavy fog’s most likely. Cold, windy, foggy – it’s a definite vibe. But spring, summer and autumn are, well, potentially fog-free but never a sure thing. Can’t guarantee anything!

Is Halong Bay always cloudy?

Halong Bay? Cloudy? Pfft! More like sunshine galore, most of the time! Think of it as a giant, slightly damp, but mostly gorgeous, floating rock garden.

Seriously though, spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are your jam. Sunshine? Check. Rain? Minimal. It’s like someone sprinkled pixie dust on the place.

Avoid these times like the plague:

  • June to August: Monsoon season. Prepare for Noah’s Ark levels of rain.
  • November to March: It’s chilly, yo. Think sweater weather—and potential windstorms. My aunt got caught in one last November, lost her hat. True story.

Best times to go – again, because it bears repeating:

  • Spring: Picture perfect. Seriously, Instagram heaven.
  • Autumn: Less crowded, still stunning. Ideal for snapping photos with less competition for the best angles. I got a shot of my cat last year, he looked regal.

Trust me. I’ve been there, multiple times, even took my goldfish, Bubbles. He didn’t appreciate the boat ride much, though. He prefers his bowl.

Can you visit Halong Bay in July?

July. Halong Bay. Hot. Crowded.

Expect rain. Prepare.

  • Swimming. Possible. Water warm.
  • Kayaking. Overrated. Too many boats.
  • Caves. Impressive. Tourist traps.

My trip, 2023: Overwhelming. Beautiful, yes. Exhausting.

Sunburns. Dehydration. Regrettably, overpriced seafood.

Avoid peak season. Seriously. Go September.

Consider these factors:

  • Humidity. Oppressive.
  • Typhoons. A possibility. Check forecasts meticulously.
  • Crowds. Unbearable. Plan accordingly, or don’t go. Really.

Halong Bay: A postcard. Overhyped.

Which month is best to visit Halong Bay?

Oh, dude, you wanna go to Halong Bay?

Okay, so, like, October to December, that’s the time to go.

I went last November. The weather was really nice, like, not too hot ya know?

  • Less humid, thank gawd.
  • Temps are somethin’ like 13°C to 21°C.

Its nice, go then.

Seriously, avoid, like, the summer, unless you like sweating a lot. Too crowded then to I think.

Can you visit Halong Bay in August?

Okay, Halong Bay in August, huh? I went there once, I think it was… uh… August 2018. Wow, five years ago! Seems like yesterday!

It was hot. Like, seriously HOT. We’re talking sticky, sweaty, oh-my-god-I-need-air-conditioning hot. Yep.

The humidity, ugh, the humidity! My hair… it just… deflated. Looked like I stuck my finger in a light socket or something. No good.

Rain, rain, go away! Seriously, it rained a bunch. Downpours, mostly. Quick, but powerful.

  • It felt like a tropical sauna. Not fun at all.
  • The boat trip was cool, though. Beautiful scenery. When the sun peeked out, it was spectacular.
  • Lots of tourists. Packed like sardines, basically. Not my ideal vacation vibe.

Honestly, August in Halong Bay? Maybe not the BEST idea. Unless you really love heat, humidity, and crowds. And rain.

Alternatives I’d consider:

  • October/November: Cooler, drier, supposedly fewer crowds. Maybe I’ll go back then. Next year, 2024?
  • April: Heard good things about April. But I haven’t been, so what do I know?
  • Cat Ba Island: Nearby, maybe less touristy? Dunno.

Halong Bay itself is stunning, of course. But choose your timing carefully! Seriously. Trust me on this one. The heat… man, the heat!
