Okay, so, like, I swear this happened. Rome, Italy, July 2024. I was dying for gelato, right? Near the Pantheon, scorching sun, tourist central.

I find this tiny gelato shop, looked legit, family-run kinda place. Ordered a pistachio and a stracciatella (drool).

Reached for my wallet, ready to whip out my trusty Mastercard. The guy, this older dude with a serious mustache, just shakes his head. Nah.

“No Mastercard,” he says, in thick Italian accent. Visa only.

Visa ONLY? What?! I was floored. Never happened before, anywhere! I’ve used my Mastercard in, like, every corner of the globe. France, Japan, even some random market stalls in Thailand. Never an issue.

I stared. I felt like he just announced the end of the world. Had to scramble for cash. Luckily, I had some Euros stashed. Crisis averted, but the gelato was slightly less enjoyable knowing my Mastercard was rejected.

The strangest thing? A souvenir shop, two stores down, only accepted Mastercard. Talk about chaotic. Why? I have no idea. Seriously, it was so bizarre.
