Laos. It borders Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, China, and Myanmar. Multi-ethnic nation. Political system: socialist republic. The Lao kip is currency. One needs to exchange. Vientiane. Located on the Mekong River. Trade occurs. It’s not that developed. Has become more touristy in 2024. Night markets exist. Get a good bargain. Bargain hard. The city contrasts. Poverty and progress. One sees both. You get used to it. I’ve seen worse. What else can one do? It’s alright I guess.

Okay, so Vientiane? Yeah, it’s right on the Mekong River. Like, seriously right on it. The river kinda loops around there, and get this – it also makes up the border with Thailand at that point. Crazy, right?

It’s not just, like, near the Mekong, it is the Mekong. Think of it this way. It’s the city’s lifeblood, y’know? Really important and central, and the views are amazing, actually.

And Vientiane, the city itself, is split into a bunch of districts. I believe there are five, specifically. Vientiane prefecture is what they call it.

Oh! I went to the night market once, right there on the riverfront in Vientiane, and bought the cutest hand-woven scarf. It was so cheap too. Bargaining is a must. It’s like, the thing to do.

It’s like, the lifeblood of Southeast Asia.

• It’s incredibly important for all those countries. For transportation, fishing, everything.
• Lots of rice paddies too, along its banks. I saw tons!

This river, the Mekong, it’s a total game changer for those regions. Absolutely essential. Think about it, most of the Mekong’s drainage area is in those four countries—the lower course, of course. I read that fact somewhere, it’s totally true. Seriously impressive. The river itself, well, it’s just breathtaking. The whole area is amazing. Amazing!

And yeah, about those capitals…Vientiane and Phnom Penh. They’re both pretty cool places. I spent, like, a week in each, maybe more. Time just flies when you’re having fun, you know? Anyways, the Mekong. Don’t forget the Mekong.

Vientiane, the capital, often wins for its job market, a magnetic force especially for folks in NGOs or infrastructure. It’s a vibrant city. Think urban energy. You can find most things that matter.

Luang Prabang is slower, more spiritual. Expect temples at every turn. Some expats prefer its laid-back vibe. I almost moved there once to become a monk.

• Vientiane: More jobs, more action, bigger selection of hummus at the supermarket.
• Luang Prabang: Serenity now! Temples, Mekong River sunsets.

Why not consider smaller towns like Vang Vieng? It’s changed a lot. Or perhaps somewhere in the mountains, for a truly different flavor. But Vientiane and Luang Prabang are the established hubs. The usual suspects.
