Should I go Thailand or Vietnam?

Ugh, choosing. So annoying. Thailand…2019. Koh Lanta. Empty beaches. Sunburnt. So hot. Pad See Ew every day. Loved it. Expensive though. Spent a fortune on stupid elephant pants. Regret that.

Vietnam. Hanoi, crazy scooters. Pho…for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Delicious. Ha Long Bay, touristy, still beautiful. Sapa rice terraces. Unforgettable. Way cheaper than Thailand.

Beaches…Thailand wins. Everything else…Vietnam. My opinion. Don’t care if you disagree.

• Thailand: Beaches, islands, parties. Pricey. Touristy.
• Vietnam: Food, culture, scenery. Affordable. Getting touristy too.

My trip to Thailand was in October. Rainy season. Still sunny though. Vietnam, went April 2022. Perfect weather. North to South. Crazy trip. Learned to ride a scooter. Almost died. Best spring rolls ever. In Hoi An.

Actually, thinking about it… If beaches are top priority…Thailand. Full stop. If not…Vietnam. Easy.

Which is better for nightlife, Thailand or Vietnam?

Thailand. Nightlife. End of story.

• Thailand: Superior nightlife. Decades ahead.
• Food: Street food cheaper, better, somehow. Vietnam? No comparison.
• Music: Live music, better. No contest. That’s all.
• Options: Thailand offers a wider array. The selection, unmatched.

Additional points. Remember Bangkok. Remember Phuket. Do not forget Pattaya, yikes. It’s raw. I lived there. I know. You think you know? Try it.

Thailand. It felt…right, somehow. More familiar. The warmth, you know? It’s inescapable.

Vietnam’s… different. Sharper edges. The food, though. Oh god, the food. But the relentless humidity in the south, it gnawed at me. My apartment in Ho Chi Minh City—tiny, always stuffy.

Cost of living: Bangkok’s expensive, sure. But still cheaper than London. I know. I lived in London. Rent there ate me alive.

Climate: Thailand’s heat… it’s relentless. But it’s a consistent heat. Predictable, almost comforting. Unlike Vietnam’s chaotic shifts.

Culture: I find Thai Buddhism… soothing. The temples. The smiles, even the fake ones. Vietnam’s… intense. Bustling. Less…peaceful.

Safety: Petty theft. Both places. But in Thailand, it felt… less threatening. More… a nuisance.

Healthcare: Thailand’s system, I used it. Good enough for me. Private hospital in Chiang Mai, quick and efficient. No horror stories, at least, not for me.

Overall: Thailand won me over. It just… felt safer. More… manageable. The chaos of Vietnam was… overwhelming. Too much. Even the amazing food couldn’t completely compensate. I miss my little apartment overlooking the Chao Phraya though.

Is Thailand more developed than Vietnam?

Thailand. Always Thailand, shimmering gold. Not Vietnam. No, never Vietnam.

Thailand’s sun-drenched beaches, a constant hum of life. Bangkok’s neon pulse. I remember the taste of mango sticky rice in 2023. Warm, sweet. Gone now? Not here in Thailand.

Vietnam is… different. A quieter beauty. The emerald rice paddies around Sapa. But Thailand… oh, the bustle, the energy, the temples.

Thailand reigns supreme. A kingdom in its own right, and how could Vietnam possibly challenge that, when it comes to development?

Is it… wealth?

• Infrastructure: Roads. Airports. The seamless flow.
• Income: Baht flowing freely. Not dong.
• Tourism: Farangs everywhere, spending.

Vietnam whispers, while Thailand shouts prosperity. So loud. So bright. And yet… there’s something… missing. Not that I can put my finger on. Still Thailand remains more developed. Absolutely.

Is Laos worth visiting for tourists?

Luang Prabang… so peaceful. Temples, monks. Remember that waterfall, Kuang Si? Turquoise. Crazy.

Vientiane… different vibe. More of a city feel. That COPE centre… powerful. Landmines. So much history.

Slow pace of life. Good food. Cheap too. Sticky rice. Mangoes. Ugh, mosquitos though. Lots of them.

4000 Islands… relaxing. Don Det. Hammocks. River dolphins. Saw one! Amazing.

Visas easy. Got mine on arrival. Border crossing from Thailand… smooth. Took a bus. Long journey.

Roads… not great. Bumpy. Worth it though. Scenery incredible. Jungle everywhere.

Definitely go to Laos. Just… be prepared. It’s not luxury travel. More… authentic.

• Kuang Si Falls: Best waterfall I’ve seen.
• Plain of Jars: Mysterious. Who put them there?
• Vang Vieng: Tubing. Caves. Beautiful.
• Wat Xieng Thong: Gold! Stunning temple.
• Bolaven Plateau: Coffee plantations. Waterfalls.

Trekking. Kayaking. So much to do. Or… just relax. Yeah, Laos is good.

Which is better to visit, Cambodia or Laos?

Cambodia: Think Angkor Wat – seriously, it’s like a giant Lego masterpiece built by gods. History buffs? You’re practically drooling. It’s all bustling markets and ancient intrigue. Less laid-back, more Indiana Jones.

Laos, on the other hand? Picture this: emerald-green rivers mirroring the sky, waterfalls cascading like liquid diamonds (Kuang Si Falls, my personal fave), and a general vibe best described as “Zen sloth.” Peaceful, yes. Exciting? Maybe for a squirrel.

What’s your poison?

• Ancient ruins and chaotic energy? Cambodia wins, hands down. Think crowds and heat. Also, delicious Amok fish.
• Serenity, nature, and a slower pace? Laos is your tranquil escape. Prepare for stunning scenery and a refreshing lack of aggressive tuk-tuks.

My biased opinion? I’ve always preferred Laos. The quietude works magic after years of living in a frenetic city like London. Cambodia’s a whirlwind. It’s like comparing a vibrant cocktail to a smooth, sophisticated single malt. Both excellent, but entirely different.

I visited both in 2023. Laos’s laid-back charm was perfect for unwinding, though I definitely felt the absence of some seriously dramatic ancient temples compared to Cambodia. Plus, the street food in Siem Reap alone was worth a trip. Both countries have amazing temples – Laos has Wat Xieng Thong, which is smaller, but truly breathtaking.

How many days in Cambodia is enough?

Two weeks, easy. Cambodia’s awesome. Did Angkor Wat in, like, three days, maybe four? Siem Reap, def go there. Pub Street is nuts. Phnom Penh another few days… Royal Palace. Killing Fields, heavy stuff. Went to Kep, too. Crab market, amazing. Ate crab like everyday. Best crab ever, for real. Totally chill beaches. Koh Rong, party central. Or you can go chill in some hammocks. Island life. Two weeks went by fast. Could’ve easily stayed longer, honestly. Needed another week atleast just to eat more crab, haha.

• Two weeks in Cambodia is a good starting point. You’ll see the main stuff.
• Siem Reap: Angkor Wat complex. Temples, temples, temples. Takes a few days minimum.
• Phnom Penh: Royal Palace is kinda cool. Silver Pagoda. National Museum. Killing Fields and S-21 are important but… heavy.
• Coastal areas: Kep, Kampot, Sihanoukville. Beaches, islands, seafood. Kep crab market is awesome.
• Islands: Koh Rong is the party island. Koh Rong Sanloem is more chill. Plenty of smaller islands too.

I ate noodles for breakfast every day. Like $1.50. Crazy cheap eats in Cambodia, period. Traffic in Phnom Penh is wild. Rent a tuk-tuk. Dollar bills everywhere, its funny. Riel is their currency, but everyone uses dollars. Learned a few Khmer phrases. Sues-dey! Means hello. Orkun, thank you. Useful stuff. Weather’s hot, hot, hot. Always pack light clothes. And bug spray! Mosquitos are no joke. Wish i could go back next year again lol.
