Which is better, Vietnam or Thailand?

Thailand: Ideal for first-time Asian travelers seeking established tourist infrastructure, stunning beaches, and a balance of adventure and relaxation.

Vietnam: Better for adventurous souls wanting unique, less-touristed experiences and authentic cultural immersion. The choice depends on your travel style.

Vietnam vs. Thailand: Which is the best travel destination?

Okay, so Vietnam or Thailand for travel? Ugh, tough one. I get asked this all the time!

Thailand’s like, the ultimate starter kit for Southeast Asia, y’know? Picture perfect beaches. I went to Railay Beach, Krabi (around 800 baht for a day trip, I think? Ages ago!). Super tourist-friendly.

Vietnam… feels different. It’s got this real raw energy. More “real,” I guess. Think hidden gems, less polished, more adventure.

Plus, you can REALLY get lost in Vietnam, explore the untouched.

Been to both, loved both, but for a first-timer… maybe Thailand wins, just. (Sorry Vietnam!)

Where is better, Thailand or Vietnam?

Okay, so Thailand versus Vietnam, huh? Been to both. Absolutely loved Thailand. The beaches in Phuket, 2023, were stunning. Seriously, postcard-perfect. The food? Amazing. Pad Thai everywhere. I gained five pounds, easily. But it was worth it. Expensive though, even outside the tourist traps. Drinks, especially. Ouch.

Vietnam, on the other hand, felt different. Sapa in northern Vietnam, last year. The rice terraces were incredible. Breathtaking, actually. The people were so friendly! Way friendlier than some places in Thailand I visited. Way cheaper too. Ate like a king for a pittance. Seriously. My wallet rejoiced. Motorbikes everywhere. A bit chaotic, I admit. But exhilarating!

Thailand wins on beaches, hands down. Absolutely gorgeous. Vietnam wins on cost, no question. The difference is massive. Plus the food in Vietnam—different spices. So interesting. I even tried some weird things, I’m not proud of it but the experience was awesome.

So… which is better? Depends what you want. Luxury and stunning beaches? Thailand. Adventure, delicious food, and budget travel? Vietnam.

  • Thailand: Beautiful beaches, amazing food (but pricey!), more developed tourist infrastructure.
  • Vietnam: More affordable, friendly locals, unique cultural experiences, stunning rice terraces.
  • Cost: Vietnam significantly cheaper.

Should you go to Thailand or Vietnam first?

Thailand first. Easier.

Vietnam? More demanding. Experienced travelers only.

Thailand Advantages:

  • Easier navigation.
  • Simple communication (English).
  • Tourist infrastructure superior.

Vietnam Advantages:

  • Authentic cultural immersion.
  • Richer history, arguably.
  • Cheaper, potentially. But not always.

My 2024 trip: Vietnam. Challenging, rewarding. Bangkok? Been there. Done that. Twice. Hanoi’s streets, though. Unforgettable. Food, though. Both amazing. Different flavors.

Note: Cost varies wildly based on travel style in both countries.

Should I do Vietnam or Thailand first?

Thailand first, duh! Vietnam is like Thailand’s scrappy cousin, if you catch my drift. One’s a spa day, the other’s a wild jungle trek, and honestly, who wants to wrestle a python right outta the gate?

Thailand: the easy mode of Southeast Asia. Think readily available Pad Thai, and beaches that could make a mermaid jealous! Need a guide? They practically hand ’em out! It’s like Disneyland, but with more elephants, and less…Mickey Mouse.

Vietnam’s more of a hardcore quest. Imagine motorbikes dodging water buffalo, pho that demands you respect its heritage, and a landscape that screams adventure. Get ready for the unexpected.

Here’s the lowdown, traveler:

  • Thailand: Beaches, bustling Bangkok, boatloads of tourists doing yoga. I mean really, it’s basically Australia’s warm, slightly spicier annex.
  • Vietnam: Think history, crazy traffic that will age you ten years, and food so good, it’ll make you wanna slap your grandma. (Figuratively, of course! Don’t slap your grandma.)
  • Solo Travel Vibe Check: Thailand is chill vibes only. Vietnam is more, uh, find yourself vibes. That is, if you don’t get lost in a rice paddy first.
  • Ease of travel? Thailand is smooth sailing. Vietnam is…well, let’s just say my aunt Mildred tried to drive a scooter there. It did not end well. Think bumper cars, but with way more livestock.
  • Costs, gotta have it. Thailand is good, you find cheap guesthouses. Vietnam, maybe cheaper, good for bargaining.

So, there you have it. Thailand for a soft landing, Vietnam for when you’re ready to channel your inner Indiana Jones (minus the fedora, unless you’re into that kinda thing, no judgement). Have fun!
